Ben & Jerry’s is the first winner of the Compassion in World Farming’s Good Dairy Award.
The prize celebrates excellence in animal welfare in the dairy sector, and recognises the brand’s ongoing commitment to sustainable dairy farming – a philosophy brought to life by the Caring Dairy ProgrammeLink opens in a new window.
“The Caring Dairy programme is based on three simple principles: Happy Cows, Happy Farmers and Happy Planet,” says Illaria Ida, Ben & Jerry’s European Social Mission Manager.
“Caring for a cow’s health and well-being is not only good for the cow, but improves the overall performance of a farm too. With reduced risk of illness, cows produce better quality milk… and better quality milk means better tasting ice cream.”
Ben & Jerry’s works closely with dairy farmers in the Netherlands to ensure their cows are provided with the best conditions.
The cows receive ample food and drink, get plenty of exercise and room to graze, and have a comfortable place to sleep. They even receive relaxing massages.
“We are delighted with the support the farmers have given to our Caring Dairy programme. It’s their effort throughout the initiative that has enabled us to win this award,” adds Illaria.
The Caring Dairy programme, launched in 2003, is a partnership between Ben & Jerry’s and CONOLink opens in a new window, the makers of Beemster cheese, and involves almost 500 farmers.
